Apart from having the privilege of working with the wonderful volunteer staff at the Princess Shop, my role as Fairy Godmother Program Coordinator has allowed me to see first-hand that people can and do make a difference. The 2011-2012 term of the Fairy Godmother Program, which was the second part of a two phase pilot, ended this March with 10 matches between Fairy Godmothers and Princess Graduates. The commitment that I saw in each match was truly inspiring. Whenever any type of relationship forms, there is a responsibility in that relationship and each Fairy Godmother and Princess Graduate in the program fulfilled those responsibilities by attending events and remaining in contact with each other at a minimum of twice a month.

I have learned so much as a result of coordinating the program. For one, that Saskatoon is a generous community, which not only welcomes the idea of positive change, but welcomes the opportunity to be a part of that change. I have learned that planning events is not always (well okay, hardly ever) a smooth process, but also that when things fall into place as planned, it is such a reward.

Some of the activities that were planned during the 2011-2012 year included making vision boards, aqua fitness, attending a play, participating in a self defense class and going to wet paint pottery. The monthly activities, from my perspective, were the highlight of coordinating the program this year. It gave me an opportunity to see everyone in person while serving as a night out for everyone, including me!

With the completion of the pilot phase of the Fairy Godmother program, we are now gearing up for the official launch, which is scheduled to begin during the 2012 grad season. I am definitely looking forward to meeting some new faces as well as continuing to see the people who choose to remain involved. I absolutely love what this program stands for. The idea that each Princess Graduate has the potential to push themselves forward in self improvement, but the knowledge that mentorship and guidance is essential in that process.

- Michelle Neufeld, Fairy Godmother Program Coordinator

The Fairy Godmother Program’s November monthly activity took place in the art room of Confederation Park Elementary School. The purpose of this meeting was to ensure that everyone left with a visual reminder of their hopes and aspirations. The idea behind vision boards is that if we are reminded visually of what we want to achieve, we are more likely to change our lives to match those desires. To make our vision boards, The Princess Shop received donations of old magazines from the Saskatoon community. Everyone in attendance left the event with a completed vision board and those that wanted to share their ideas were invited to show the rest of the group.

—
The Fairy Godmother Program provides Princess Graduates with the opportunity to build a relationship with a role model. These role models, known as Fairy Godmothers, are female volunteers from the community who wish to make a difference in the lives of young women. Once per month, all twelve matches meet for an activity – to socialize, learn, and try new things.
