"Thank you so much to everyone that helped me make this day truly special for me. When I first found out about the princess shop I never knew it was this amazing ! It was truly a day I will NEVER forget. I felt like a princess for sure and I got so many compliments on my make up hair and especially my gorgeous dress ! Thank you thank you thaaaaank you!" -Dacy, 2017 Princess Graduate

This June, we completed our 10th graduation season providing the Dress Program to 134 female-identified students graduating from school programs from 10 different communities across Saskatchewan.

Since the first graduation season in 2008, we have directly impacted the lives of 890 women on their graduation day! Some of these Princess Graduates have continued with our programs for mentorship (Fairy Godmother Program) and scholarships and skill development workshops (Next Chapter Program).

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our sponsors for supporting our 10th graduation season:

Diamond Sponsor Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon

Emerald Sponsor Federated Co-operatives Ltd.

Ruby Sponsor Wright Construction Western Inc.

Friends: SIGA, Centennial 360, EY

Sponsor a Princess Graduate: Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation

Since 2010, we have had 65 mentorship matches in the Fairy Godmother Program! Some of these matches that are in the program today have continued from as far back as 2010.

Through the Next Chapter Program, we have been able to award over $150,000 in scholarships and bursaries, thanks to the amazing sponsors we have had contributing to this program.

Most of our graduates are grade 12 students, however we honour requests from Grade 8s and post-secondary institutions. Our goal is to ensure that all female-identified students can attend their graduation ceremony and celebration stress-free, and then continue to pursue success in the next chapter!

It is more than a dress – everyone deserves the opportunity to recognize their accomplishments and participate fully in their graduation celebration. If you know anyone who would benefit from knowing about The Princess Shop (teacher, student or general supporter), please send them a link to our website!

Dear High School Graduates...

posted by The Princess Shop    |   June 12, 2017 12:17

Dear High School Graduates,

I want to express my greatest happiness towards you and your newfound freedom. I also want to comfort you in the stress that can be found in this freedom. It is an absolutely exciting time but seems to bring with it the pressure of deciding life’s most important decisions in the midst of just trying to graduate.

I wish I had counted how many times I had been asked the question, “What are you doing next year?” when I was graduating high school. At the time it felt completely overwhelming.  Now, 8 years later, I realize having the perfect answer wasn’t as important as I thought it had been at the time. I had over stressed choosing THE right thing to do. The point is I made a choice that led me to another and another, which brings me to today.

I chose to go become a teacher and worked towards that for 6 years after finishing high school. I love being a teacher but I also know that if I had decided to do something else I could have been happy doing that too. There isn’t one decision that leads you to happiness. There is a world of possibilities. This idea doesn’t get rid of the fact that you still have a decision to make, but I wanted give you a few things to keep with you – 8 actually – during the process.

1. Surround yourself with people that are supportive of YOU. If you are in a process of figuring out who you are don’t let your decisions be made primarily to please others. Find people that encourage you to be YOU.

2. Travel. You can plan to travel nearby or travel far. There is something about experiencing other places and meeting different people that opens your eyes to a new perspective. It forces you think in a changed way. It’s possible to travel affordably by finding cheap flights, staying in hostels, or finding work-as-you-travel organizations.

3. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. There are different ways to figure out who you are. It looks different for everyone. You don’t have to travel to “find yourself” or discover who you are. You DO you have to try new things. Maybe it looks like making friends with people who are completely different than you or spending time on your own. Whatever it may be, you need to try things that scare you.

4. Volunteer. If you feel as though you are floating in sea of  “I have NO idea what to do with my life” start plugging into various organizations. You gain experience in a variety of settings and meet people from all walks. You can be helping someone else in need, adding meaning to your own life during your time of searching.

5. Ask for advice. Many people are going to offer you unwanted or unneeded advice but seek out people you admire and ask THEM questions. It could be helpful or maybe isn’t relevant to your situation but you really don’t have anything to lose.

6. Find a job and save for the unknown. Don’t spend your money on menial items while you pass your time thinking of what you want to do. Start saving because eventually you might have an idea of what you’d like to do and a savings account to back it up wouldn’t hurt.

7. What you decide to do next year isn’t going to dictate what you will do for the rest of your life. Whether you chose to find an entry-level job and start working or enroll in University classes, don't feel as though you are stuck in that place forever.

8. Don't be afraid to try something, fail or realize you don’t like it. You aren’t going to be sure about every decision you make. Actually, most of the important decisions I’ve made have all had a little bit of uncertainty to them. Knowing that it’s okay to fail will give you some confidence to just give things a try.

The bottom line is, you’re just at one beginning here. There will be so many more beginnings in your life, your beautiful life. Take a deep breath, you’ve got this!

Sincerely,

A sister who cares

7 Reasons Why You Should Visit The Karma Cafe in Saskatoon

posted by The Princess Shop    |   April 19, 2017 14:52

1. 3% of your purchase will be donated to a local nonprofit/charity. The Princess Shop is the lucky and grateful beneficiary February-July 2017. This speaks to their name, The Karma Café – Conscious Café & Eatery. This local business was built upon the philosophy that it goes beyond serving the community delicious food, to giving back to the community.

2. The owners are the nicest people you’ll ever meet. This attitude is also reflected in the staff which is always welcoming and helpful.

3. Their Bulletproof Chai Latte. If you haven’t tried it, what are you waiting for? It is great iced or hot, and has the perfect balance of Black Chai Tea, Grass fed Butter, Coconut Oil, Raw Honey, Dash of cream, Ginger, Cinnamon, and Turmeric. This among their other amazing teas, lattes and hot smoothies… so delicious!

4. Located in beautiful downtown Saskatoon. Located at 157 2nd Ave North, this spot is super accessible by all modes of transportation, and they have a cute sidewalk patio!

5. The décor is both cozy and bright. It makes you want to bring your favorite book or journal, friend for a catch-up, or a date – it appeals to all!

6. The Nighttime Menu launches tonight (April 20) and it is full of amaaaaaaaazing food and cocktails. Our Executive Director, Karen, received a special invite to the preview tasting and can’t stop thinking about the Dim Sums, Samosa Flautas, or the Key Lime Beergarita. The Nighttime Menu be offered Thursday-Saturdays 6pm-10pm.

7. So many other reasons… Including the fact they hosted our Fairy Godmother Program mentorship group after hours for two nights in March, they attended our Glass Slipper Benefit, and they are planning a fundraiser (stay tuned)!

In closing, local businesses like The Karma Café are so important to support as they are built to better the community through experience and giving back. Please plan your next trip to The Karma Café soon!
